The facts:

  • Every two minutes a woman dies of cervical cancer worldwide.
  • Cervical cancer is more common that breast cancer in South Africa.
  • A common virus, Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), is the main cause of cervical cancer.
  • You may be at risk, whatever your age.
  • The virus is transmitted through sexual intercourse and intimate skin-to-skin contact in the genital area. Condoms do not offer full protection.
  • Infection rarely shows symptoms, While most infections clear up naturally, some remain and may develop into cervical cancer.
  • Regular smear test are the most effective way of detecting cervical abnormalities which could be the early signs of cervical cancer.

  • New vaccines combined with regular screening will offer an even higher level of protection, with vaccination preventing up to 70% of all cervical cancers.
  • Females from 10 years of age onwards would benefit from HPV vaccination.
  • The vaccination course consists of 3 injections into the arm at 0 months, 1 month & 6 months.
  • Vaccination may offer up to 100% protection against the HPV strains present in the vaccine.
